NEWCASTLE: GIVEN SUGGESTS FIVE, SIX SIGNINGS
Newcastle United legend Shay Given has urged the club to sign five or six more players to challenge at the top end of the Premier League table in the new season. Shay Given suggested potential new signings at St. James Park while he was on Premier League TV for the 2021/22 show. Given is a former Newcastle United goalkeeper who was a regular in the starting XI for several years. Apart from the Magpies, the Republic of Ireland man also played for Manchester City and Aston Villa. The retired Irish international spent the longest part of his career at Newcastle United.
On reinforcements needed for the Newcastle United squad this summer, Shay Given mentioned Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson as a possible transfer as the England international would provide competition for Slovakian star Martin Dubravka who’s the first choice goalkeeper at St. James Park. For the defence, Burnley star James Tarkowski was mentioned as a possible addition to the Newcastle United squad. Tarkowski is available on a free transfer after his contract expired at Burnley who were demoted to the English Championship from the Premier League. Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham United have also been linked with the 29-year-old Burnleycentre back.
Given also talked about signing Englishman Kalvin Philips from Leeds United. The midfielder has been linked with a move away from his club despite maintaining that his future is at Elland Road. The England international has been seriously linked with several English clubs including Newcastle United. Apart from Newcastle United, Philips is a transfer target for Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
Shay Given also mentioned the Brentford duo of Christian Eriksen and Ivan Toney as possible Newcastle United additions. England international Tammy Abraham of AS Roma was also talked about as a potential Newcastle United target on the back of his impressive debut season in Italian football.
